Letters &   References

The South County Community Concert Association closed its season with a concert that rocked the walls of Southern auditorium. Revolution: The Beatles Tribute packed in a large audience, some of whom were major Beatles fans while others concluded they were fans only when they realized how many of the songs they knew. "I loved seeing the joyful response to familiar Beatles music that the performers played and sang so capably. It seemed we were really hearing the Beatles play and appreciated the music even more from hindsight," said longtime SCCA volunteer Betty Knupp. "I noticed how silent the audience was during selections like 'Imagine' with its dreamed message of peace. And the next moment they were standing and swaying hands and bodies -- fun to see. The performers did a terrific job involving and energizing the audience. This concert was a spontaneous and joyful happening."

Although other groups perform Beatles hits, this is a unique group of serious musicians, not mere imitators. As played by Revolution -- Greg Piper as George Harrison on lead guitar, Les Perez as drummer Ringo Starr, Tim Piper on guitar and keyboard as John Lennon, and Jim Neil as Paul McCartney on bass -- the music became all it is meant to be in our era.

The concert began with a recreation of the famous 1964 Ed Sullivan television show introducing the Fab Four to American audiences and ushering in Beatlemania. When asked how many remembered the Sullivan broadcast, there was a large show of hands from people in the audience. An opera lover, I am a bit late to appreciate Beatles music, understanding its appeal only after hearing Metropolitan Opera tenor Jan Pearce sing "And I Love Her," a revelation in its simple melodic beauty. And the Beatles show "Love" at the Mirage in Las Vegas was my favorite among 10 shows covered last summer during an American Theatre Critics Association conference. This Cirque du Soleil production features original mono recordings transferred into a more than 60-channel sound that surrounds the audience. No lesser authorities than Ringo
Starr and Paul McCartney have agreed the What we heard at South County was Beatles music revisited and interpreted brightly and lovingly by talented musicians. Maybe the over-simplicity that rock critics accused the Beatles music of is what
makes it endure along with its joyous innocence. It is music that celebrates discovery and life. It was startling to see Tim Piper, who sounds and looks like Lennon and exhibits a similar quiet charm. When he appeared in a white suit, his hair long and straight, to sit at the keyboard and play "Imagine," the mood became a compelling moment of universal truth spoken anew. Encouraged to stand and stretch near the end of the first half, some in the audience joyously danced near the stage. Later they rose again to move their arms in rhythm to "Hey Jude," to create an enormous musical wave -- a rarely witnessed defining moment in concertgoing.

REVOLUTION

Just a note to tell you how much we appreciate REVOLUTION'S appearance in our Courtyard Concert Series here at the Smithsonian Institution's National Portrait Gallery. This was definitely the most successful concert series we've ever presented here and you guys were responsible for setting the momentum of that success by providing the kink-off concert for THE BEATLES' SECOND INVASION. Our visitors were not just entertained, they were enchanted. One of our programming goals is to bring people into the gallery to view the exhibitions and we certainly accomplished that. Not only did people visit the FACES OF TIME exhibition, but I speculate that the most popular object view during that period was the Gerald Scarfe papier-mache of the Beatles.

Over the run of the concert series, almost 5,000 people attended and many of those visitors continue to rave about your group: your stage presence, your musicianship, and your incredible resemblance to the original Beatles.

It was a real joy to present you guys here at the Portrait Gallery. You are not only gifted musicians but you're also a pleasure to work with. I have forwarded your group's name to the other museums that are presenting the FACES OF TIME exhibition.

My warmest regards to all of you in REVOLUTION. The entire institute joins me in thanking all of you for your willingness to come and recreate for us the magic we remember as the BEATLES.

Sincerely,Jewell Robinson

REVOLUTION

Please accept this letter as a glowing endorsement of REVOLUTION - THE BAND THAT GOES BEYOND BEATLEMANIA. Their set on our main stage was very well-received by our audience. Expert musicianship and very tight harmonies made their one hour set one of the best we have had at our facility. In addition to a fine performance, I was very impressed with the professionalism of the group.

REVOLUTION - THE BAND THAT GOES BEYOND BEATLEMANIA

I have just 7 words to describe REVOLUTION . . . . FANTASTIC, UNBELIEVABLE, AMAZING, INCREDIBLE, and "REAL NICE GUYS". I was never so impressed as I was with the act REVOLUTION. They not only put on an incredible show, but they are also the nicest people to work with. They love their audience and the audience loves them, especially the kids. Kids from 5 to 17 went nuts when they found out they could get REVOLUTION'S autographs after the show. It really brought me back to the 60's and their back screen video of all the 60's memorabilia and Beatles trivia really added to their already GREAT show!

I must say, I was skeptical when you said they look, act, and sound just like the Beatles, but they really do! The audience comments during intermission were amazing and the after show comments were equally impressive. It's now 3 weeks since their incredible show and I'm still getting feedback on their performance.

Meridith, I am definitely going to have them back for another concert, because people are already asking me when they will be back. There is no question in my mind the second time around will be as equally successful as the first. I'm looking forward to working with you and REVOLUTION again in the future.

Thanks for letting me know about this fantastic group! Feel free to give my name to anyone for a reference for their incredible show.

MT GRETNA THEATRE

REVOLUTION

Forgive the lateness of this communique. I was waiting for the final numbers to come in on REVOLUTION, anticipating that I would have great news to announce. And I do, REVOLUTION - THE BAND THAT GOES BEYOND BEATLEMANIA did the single biggest box office in recent Mt. Gretna history!

When I booked the boys, I knew from past experience that they would give us a great show and perhaps bring in a younger, more diverse, audience. Never in my wildest dreams did I think they would practically sell-out a 700 seat house -- former home of the American Shaw Festival -- with an audience accustomed to legit theatre and book musicals.

I suspect that Tim Piper has made all the difference. Now that he will be playing John Lennon on the tube the group has moved into the world of "star" attraction. I had all five papers from Harrisburg to Philadelphia leading with an interview or giving us major space in their Sunday and Friday editions. Receiving high profile press, TV and radio (the number one station in the area) was a breeze.

As to the show and the guys themselves: like everyone else who works with the act, I consider them to be one of the most professional, charming, gracious and fun group of people with whom I have ever worked. Their outreach into the community, attention to their audience after the show and respect for the staff and crew is in a class by itself.

In twenty five years in the business, I've never seen grandparents, parents and kids (even babies) dancing in the aisles. A heartfelt thank you from everyone here at the theatre.

Sincerely,

Pat Julian
Executive Director

To Whom It May Concern:

Beatlemania and all things related have always intrigued me since the fresh new age of 4, when the Beatles first appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show. Following their career has been a life-long pleasure. During this pursuit, I have been honored to work closely with the original Broadway cast and crew of Beatlemania, during its original run in the late 70's and early 80's. Since that time, I have followed these truly original cast members in the more than 40 different Beatle tribute bands that they have
pioneered.

It has been my great pleasure through these connections to witness the inception and growing evolution of the tribute band Revolution. They are by far the most exciting Beatle tribute band that I have ever seen, paying a much more accurate and complimentary tribute to the Beatles than anyone. Though
a few of the other tributes do still include original cast members from the Broadway show, the talent and abundantly energetic portrayals that Revolution provide are the truest testimonial to the Fab Four, as any tribute should be.

With Tim Piper as John Lennon, it is truly a flashback to that era - for Beatle fans and, more universally, true rock and roll fans. Having seen many, many John Lennon portrayals, I can easily say that his is the most accurate homage to that long lost legend. You truly believe that he is John Lennon.

If someone were to see only one Beatle tribute band in their lifetime, they would be completely awe-inspired by the tribute band Revolution.

Most Sincerely,

From: "Patrick"
To: <revolution@imaginethebeatles.com> Just saw you guys live in Ellsworth Maine. You guys are amazing, wonderful, spectacular, and very honorable in tribute to John, Paul, George, and Ringo. The Beatles themselves were magic and I believe in the magic of John Lennon smiling down in approval of what you guys are doing. Today's music is a candle in a hurricane comapared to the fantastic songs The Beatles came up with and you guys help to bring that fact to light. Wow!!! What a show!!! I was almost in tears at one point in seeing the children of all ages that were dancing up a storm as you guys performed. Where the Beatles themselves stopped touring early on, you guys are just nothing short of incredible in the way you perform live. Do you realize that you are actually, most probably better than the Beatles. I went to the show as a late decision to go, and I sure hope you keep Ellsworth Maine in mind for a return engagement possibly next summer. If you guys return for antother performance I will be sure to bring the entire family………Children, grandchildren, brothers and sisters, cousins, aunts and uncles. And if so, I know there will be again, in Ellsworth Maine, children of all ages dancing up a storm during your very honorable, fantastic tribute to the Beatles. Sincerely, Patrick of downeast Maine.p.s. It is also a great part of the show to see John and Paul being very co-operative. I am sure they would have had a great Beatles reunion if John had been allowed to survive. I was always a big John Lennon fan, but your show also made me appreciate Paul and all of them even more than I had before. Your tribute show shows how great The Beatles actually were.<----which moved me to saying…."today's music is a 'candle in a hurricane' in comparison." I hope you guys never get tired of doing this show.

I was on my way to the House Of Blues to see my friend Greg Piper of the original rock band Tooners, also known as Womanizer, performing as George Harrison in Beatle tribute band REVOLUTION along with his brother Tim Piper I was in heaven. REVOLUTION is without a doubt the best Beatle tribute band going, my condolences to the others, but I know what I like and with the House Packed to the limit so did everyone else, the energy was awesome and the performance incredible! My HatÕs off to the House Of Blues for knowing whatÕs what.

Imagine Seeing the Beatles Live!
Eric Wolfe - Independent Los Angeles syndicated reporter

I had the pleasure of seeing Revolution perform at The Nuart Theater for the debut of the re-release of the Yellow Submarine movie in Los Angeles. Not only do the band members look like the famous rock idols, but they sound like them as well. All are brilliant musicians in their own right, (Tim Piper as John plays guitar, keyboards, and harmonica), and can sing quite well. The band reproduces almost note-for-note the classic Beatles songs we all know so well, and use a minimal amount of prerecorded material (mostly for the orchestral parts). The group goes through several costume changes, including the "Sgt. Pepper" years.

Revolution is the closest thing to seeing the real Beatles perform live, without all the hysterical fans screaming over the music or the giant stadiums with tiny speakers. Songs like "Revolution," "Sgt. Pepper…," and "Back in the USSR" all rock loud and fast, while ballads like "If I Fell" and "Imagine" (the only non-Beatles) tune) seem just as relevant as they did over twenty-five years ago. No mere impersonators, the band seems to genuinely enjoy playing the roles of the Fab Four. From the light-hearted between-song banter, (British accents included), to the sheer energy involved in playing a two hour performance, the band simply puts on a good live show. This energy overflows into the crowd of all ages, with the audience singing along to every song.

Anyone who likes the Beatles and is interested in seeing their songs performed in a live setting should definitely check this band. The four guys have one of the best jobs in the world, in my opinion, playing a greatest-hits set list from the biggest, most influential rock band ever. They consistently put on a great show, (I’ve seen them four times in the last eighteen months), and I always leave feeling high on life.
